Activity 1 (Apperception)

Answer the following questions orally!

1.      What should you do when someone is talking to you?

2.      What do you feel if someone pretends not to listen when you are talking to him/her?

Activity 2

It is very important to show our attention when talking to someone. We should listen to him/her carefully, then respond to his/her speaking on the right moment. In this activity, your teacher will read a dialogue, then please write down the expressions of taking attention used in the dialogue!

Ruslan :  Congratulation!

Nila     :  On what?

Ruslan :  Don’t you know that you get the highest score on the Natural Science Olympiad?

Nila     :  Hmm.. You must be kidding?

Ruslan :  No. I’m serious.

Nila     :  Really?

Ruslan :  Alright, read this! (giving a newspaper)

Activity 3

The followings are some expressions we can use to show our attention. Some have been mentioned in activity 2.  Listen to your teacher, then repeat!

-          Are you serious?         -  So?                           -  Yes, of course

-          Really?                        -  How come?              -  Oh, I see

-          Does it?                       -  Mm..                        -  Tell me more about it

-          What?                          -  You are right            -  Wow, (it sounds good)

-          And then?                   -  That’s true                -  etc.              

Activity 4

Read the conversation below loudly, then answer the questions that follow!

Firman     :  Do you know Rina’s brother?

Hafid       :  Yes, of course. Why?

Firman     :  He is hospitalized.

Hafid       :  What? What happened to him?

Firman     :  He had an accident.

Hafid       :  Oh my God, how come?

Firman     :  Someone hit him and ran

Hafid       :  And then?

Firman     :  The case has been reported to the police and the man is being chased.

Hafid       :  Then, how was Dedi’s condition when you left?

Firman     :  The doctor said he was seriously injured and had to undergo surgery.

Hafid       :  Are you serious?

Firman     :  Yep

Hafid       :  Where is he now?

Firman     :  In ICU room.

Hafid       :  OK, I’ll go there now.

Questions:

4.      “Where is he now?” What does the underlined word refer to?

Work in pairs. Make a short dialogue about expressions of taking attention, then demonstrate it in front of the class!
