Expressions Showing Politeness

Expressions Showing Politeness

When we speak to others, we should be polite, either in words or in attitude, especially when we ask them to do something. In asking someone to do something, our speaking will sound polite when we ask him/her in the form of question. However, it would be more polite when we add the word “please” in our sentences. Here are the examples. Repeat them after your teacher!

1. Can/will you say that again?     (polite)
2. Can/will you say that again, please?    (more polite)

However, it would be more and more polite if we utter the sentences into past tense.

3. Could/would you say that again?
4. Could/would you say that again, please? or  Could you please say that again?
5. Could/would you mind saying that again?

Other example:
May I borrow your pen?

Please note that:
-        The underlined words are changeable, depending on the context.
-        The word “mind” is followed by “verb-ing”

Read the conversation below loudly! Practice it with your friend.

Rustam   :  Can you help me, please?
Edi          :  Sure. What can I do for you?
Rustam   :  Can you tell me where the nearest post office is?
Edi          :  It is at Jl. Soekarno-Hatta no. 15
Rustam   :  I am sorry. I have a poor memory. I will write it down. But, would you mind
                   repeating it?
Edi          :  Alright, it is at Jl. Soekarno-Hatta no. 15
Rustam   :  How can I go there?
Edi          :  Please take a bemo. Tell the driver that you want to stop at that address.
Rustam   :  Thank you very much.
Edi          : You are welcome.
